Summary

The Materials Science Seniors from the Cal State San Jose University are presenting their proposed Senior Projects.  These projects benefit from the inputs received from the attending members.  Listed below are the proposal statements.

Proposals

  • Baldwin, JohnCharacterization of Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles -   Extracts of three different plant species: Zingiber officinale (ginger), Vitis vinfera (wine grape), and Ocimum basilicum (sweet basil) will be used to reduce silver nitrate to produce silver nanoparticles. These nanoparticles will be analyzed to find impurities, crystallinity, morphology and size distribution to compare to silver nanoparticles produced traditionally. The findings of this report are to show the feasibility of using an environmentally friendly, inexpensive process to produce silver nanoparticles for high performance industries of pharmacology and nanofabrication.
  • Chua, Justin; Montecillo, Matthew; Thompsen, RyanNanocellulose Biodegradable Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites – This project investigates the extraction, and use of nanocellulose fibers for the fabrication of biodegradable PLA composites.  A number of mechanical properties will be investigated as a factor of lay-up process and various material constituent parameters.
  • Rahim, Syed:  3D Printed Molds for Centrifugal Droplet Generation in Microfluidic Devices - The purpose of this Senior Project is to create a microfluidic device by pouring PDMS into a 3D printed mold.  The design will be based on a previously published microfluidic device in which fluids are propelled by a centrifugal force.  The goal is to validate that a microfluidic system from a published design can be created using a 3D printed mold.  A study of different surface treatments on the 3D printed mold will be conducted. Parameters such as flow resistance, channel geometry, oil/water ratio, and surfactants on droplet size will be studied.
  • Fok, Daniel:  Synthesis of Zirconia by Application of Graphene Quantum Dots – For this project zirconia was synthesized using soft chemistry with graphene quantum dots (GQDs) added to see its effects on the crystallites and particles. The hypothesis was that the zirconia will nucleate around the GQDs and create small crystallites as well as particles. In addition to the small crystallites, the resulting particle shapes was also investigated as small platelet-like particles could also be extremely useful.
  • Justin, Mark:  Hafnium Oxide AR/Inversion Films Deposited by Thermal Evaporation on to MIS Solar Cells -  This project will examine the fabrication of a novel, MIS solar cell device using the laboratory capabilities and conventional photovoltaic cell fabrication capabilities at San Jose State University as a baseline.  Both conventional MIS solar cells and MIS cells with hafnium oxide films will be developed and evaluated.
