UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON RESEARCH INSTITUTE (UDRI)

POSITION TITLE:  Associate Research Engineer - Processing Science

POSITION SUMMARY

The position is focused on the processing science of polymer matrix composites (PMCs), with a combined computational and experimental focus.  The candidate is expected to contribute to characterizing and predicting the response of PMCs during fabrication – to include autoclave, out-of-autoclave, and/or infusion processing.  A combination of processing, finite element (e.g. ABAQUS), and material property models will be used to predict the part quality of composite parts.  Experimentally, the candidate will utilize thermal and mechanical analysis techniques - including but not limited to differential scanning calorimeter, dynamic mechanical analysis - to characterize the material properties and relevant polymer physics, which will be analyzed and used to perform calibration of model constants to fit the data.  In addition, the candidate will design novel thermomechanical profiles and/or experimental techniques to maximize calibration efficiency and decouple physical phenomena.  The candidate is expected to learn to operate software and experimental techniques independently, maintain awareness of the state-of-the-art, and take initiative in proposing new ideas.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Graduate degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field from an accredited University is required. Candidate will be required to have U.S. citizenship and pass a national agency background check. Necessary knowledge includes an understanding of polymer processing and thermo-mechanical characterization methods such as Thermo-gravimetric Analyzer (TGA), Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Rheometer, as evidenced by related coursework or research/work experience. The candidate must have prior research or work experience (4-6 months) with finite element analysis software such as ABAQUS. The candidate must possess good oral/communication skills with the ability to successfully interact with a variety of personality types and have good organizational skills to work on multiple projects simultaneously.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Prior experience working in a research and development facility is preferred. Experience in composite processing and design of novel test methods for material characterization is desirable.

LOCATION:  The candidate will perform on-site research at Wright Patterson AFB in the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate.

EMPLOYMENT TYPE:  Full Time
