"BAAM, Big Area Additive Manufacturing - Giant 3D Printing for Tooling, Prototyping, and Production"

Presented by: Rick Neff, Cincinnati Incorporated, Additive Manufacturing Product and Sales Manager

BAAM, Big Area Additive Manufacturing - Giant 3D Printing for Tooling, Prototyping and Production
3D Printing or additive manufacturing has migrated from small prototype parts to large production parts and tooling. While some additive manufacturing techniques are well suited to small parts, 3D printing can also be used for large parts. The progress of extruded reinforced thermoplastic additive manufacturing is used for both high temperature and room temperature composite manufacturing production.

Tooling is one of the largest contributors to cost and lead-time for a prototype aerospace program. Tools made with additive technologies can be made faster and for less money than traditional tools. Imagine slashing tooling lead-time and cost to accelerate aerospace development.

Expect to learn:

  • Why large 3D printers do not follow many of the principles of additive manufacturing as we know them.
  • What materials are used to make large high temperature parts?
  • What research has Oak Ridge National Laboratory done in collaboration with Cincinnati Incorporated, Boeing, Ford Motor Company, BASF, Techmer ES, Tru-Design, IACMI and NAVAIR in high temperature tooling?
  • Per Guinness World Records what production aerospace tool is the largest single 3D printed part ever made?
  • The evolution from early FDM technology to the BAAM technology used for large parts today including some background on other large additive projects.
