Tutorial: Additive Manufacturing 
Instructor: Dr. Jennifer Fielding, Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL)

Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, has been used for prototyping for many years and is now emerging as a mainstream manufacturing technology. Benefits of additive manufacturing include shorter lead times, mass customization, and the ability to produce parts with complex geometries that are unable to be manufactured using traditional methods. This tutorial will cover a brief history of AM technology and allow the participants to gain a deep understanding of the different types of additive manufacturing processes. The instructor will cover the pros and cons of those processes and provide guidance on which processes are suitable for which applications. An understanding will be gained of the process steps to make an additively manufactured part, from design development to post-processing and inspection. Current research in advanced materials and new processes for additive manufacturing will be covered. Examples will be given on process/structure/property relationships for high-performance polymer and metals systems. The tutorial will also cover the current state of many challenges remaining for AM – the need for improved dimensional accuracy and surface finish, process variability and controls, qualification and certification protocols, and standards development.

With over 13 years of experience at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Dr. Jennifer Fielding has performed hands-on research and program management in diverse fields such as polymer matrix composites, nanomaterials, multifunctional materials and additive manufacturing. Dr. Fielding is currently the Technical Advisor for the Structures, Propulsion and Manufacturing Enterprise Branch, Manufacturing and Industrial Technologies Division, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, Air Force Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. Dr. Fielding currently is the program manager of several America Makes programs and advises on the direction of approximately $35M in AFRL/RXMS programs in additive manufacturing and other technical fields such as polymer matrix composites and robotics in the manufacturing environment. Dr. Fielding holds a Ph.D. and MS in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Florida. Dr. Fielding has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Secretary of Defense Award for Excellence, the AFRL/RX Program Management Award and has been named a Dayton Business Journal 40 Under 40.

Panel: Integrated DOD Additive Manufacturing Roadmap

In Spring 2016, America Makes and Deloitte facilitated the development of Additive Manufacturing technology Roadmaps for the US Air Force, US Army, Department of the Navy, and Defense Logistics Agency. After a series of nine workshops, technology roadmaps for each service were produced and one joint DoD Additive Manufacturing roadmap was delivered and is available publicly at This panel will begin with an out-brief of the joint DoD Additive Manufacturing roadmap detailing DoD additive manufacturing development priorities and application areas. The panel discussion will feature the perspective of equipment manufacturers, defense OEMs, and academia regarding how the joint DoD roadmap is informing their organization's R&D investments and the priorities of the broader industrial base. We invite additive manufacturing community stakeholders to join the discussion.
