May 26, 2017 (Seattle, WA) – SAMPE 2017, the only technical conference and exhibition exclusively dedicated to advanced materials and processes, closed out its week of events with a full day of conference programs and awards luncheon. The event, produced by the North America Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE), brought 3,682 attendees from 26 countries together for business, networking, and learning.

“SAMPE members and businesses are at the forefront of new, disruptive technologies that are going to have an immense influence on our industry,” says SAMPE CEO Gregg Balko. “This event facilitates the necessary, in-person collaborations that won’t take place anywhere else.”

Throughout the week, SAMPE 2017 delivered a line-up of featured lectures by thought leaders, panel discussions on additive manufacturing, recycling, and automation, and over 200 technical paper presentations. Furthermore, groups like Boeing, IACMI, and NASA selected SAMPE 2017 as the site for their collaborative meetings, drawing upon the expertise of SAMPE’s members and taking advantage of the collective knowledge conference attendees to inform future programs.

Sold-out Exhibit Hall

With 254 exhibiting companies, new displays like the GT Lite, Hyperloop pods designed by the University of Washington and Virginia Tech, and a special Recycling Composites Showcase, attendees were inundated with new products, ideas, and solutions.

“Space for the Exhibit Hall sold out weeks before the event,” says Rick Willardson, SAMPE North America President and Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer at Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems. “This positive development is excellent for SAMPE and another sign that this event is growing each year.”

Event Highlights
Rob Meyerson, president of Blue Origin, presented the opening keynote on Tuesday, focusing on the role of advanced manufacturing in the development of reusable space vehicles.

SAMPE engaged engineering students with various ways to showcase their skills and gain exposure, hosting the SAMPE Bridge Building Competition, SAMPE Additive Manufacturing Contest, Student Poster Competition, and SAMPE Leadership Experience Awards.

This week, SAMPE announced the winners of the new North America Organizational Excellence Award - the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Materials and Manufacturing Directorate and the Boeing Company. The SAMPE North America Organizational Excellence Award is a new annual award honoring industry, academia, and government agencies that are engaged in the advanced materials and processing community. Nominees are organizations that exemplify, encourage and support SAMPE’s mission, which is making SAMPE pivotal to every new material innovation and process solution.

What comes next?

SAMPE’s next event is CAMX – The Composites and Advanced Materials Expo, taking place September 11-14, 2017 in Orlando, Florida. CAMX is jointly produced by SAMPE and ACMA (American Composites Manufactures Association).
