Donald F. Adams, FSAMPE

Donald F. Adams is the founder and President of Wyoming Test Fixtures, Inc., a company specializing in the design and fabrication of mechanical test fixtures for the composite materials community since 1988.  He is also Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wyoming where he was Director of the Composite Materials Research Group for 27 years.

Don Adams is a long time SAMPE member and volunteer contributor.  Of the tens of thousands of SAMPE professional members over these past 75 years, Don is number 24.  He is a SAMPE Fellow, served on the editorial boards of both the SAMPE Journal and the Journal of Advanced Materials, and was a member of the scholarship selection committee and the Academic Advisory council.  He has authored nineteen SAMPE papers, chaired eight conference sessions, and instructed twenty-five SAMPE tutorials.  SAMPE has benefited immensely from his contributions over his past fifty-five active years.

Dr. Adams received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois (1957), his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southern California (1960), and his Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from the University of Illinois (1963). 

His industry experience was with Northrop Aircraft Corporation, Hawthorne, California (3 years), the Aeronutronic Division of Ford Motor Company, Newport Beach, California (4 years), and the Rand Corporation, Santa Monica, California (5 years).  He joined the University of Wyoming in 1972 and retired in 1999.

Dr. Adams has been involved full-time in composite materials analysis, testing and design for over 50 years.  He headed a very active interdisciplinary composite materials research group at the University of Wyoming for many years, involving a broad range of government and industry programs.  Dr. Adams has served on a number of national and international committees and review boards, and has been a member of the editorial boards of four prominent composite materials journals.  He continues to be active in the test methods committees of ASTM and MIL-HDBK-17.  He has regularly presented seminars and short courses both in the United States and elsewhere, and has published extensively in the journal literature.
